Program Description (long):
The AmeriCorps Leadership & Conservation Program engages 16 young adults in an 11-month service and leadership development program. From February to May, Corpsmembers complete team-based projects that protect the environment, restore urban neighborhoods and provide homes for low income families. Corpsmembers work for a variety of project partners including Colorado State Parks, the US Fish & Wildlife Service, Denver Parks and Recreation, Keep Denver Beautiful, Hope Communities and Aurora Open Space and Natural Resources.
In addition to their work in the community, they participate in extensive training to prepare them to serve as Assistant Crew Leaders, Education Mentors and Skills Technicians on four crews of younger youth during the summer months. This program provides older youth with a longer-term experience that integrates community service, paid work experience, leadership development and career exploration. Serving as leaders and role models for younger youth in the Summer Program provides AmeriCorps Corpsmembers with invaluable experience that will help them be competitive when entering the workforce.
